Speech Title:Enhancement in Biogranulation Development Process

Abstract:

Biogranulation is a biological treatment technology that has increasingly attracting global attention due to its potential as a cost efficient system. Biogranules are highly structured microbial aggregates capable of degrading a wide range of biodegradable compounds.  It has excellent settling properties, good pollutant removal and possessed high resistance to toxic compounds. The microbial granule plays a vital role in biological wastewater treatment due to its obvious advantages over the conventional sludge floc. The integration of sustainable and viable engineering principles and techniques into granulation technology could achieve a short start-up time, which is not detrimental to the microbial community and development of improved aerobic granule in terms of its physical, chemical and biological characteristics, and increasing the efficiency of the treatment system is of paramount importance in granulation technology. A number of selection pressures including hydraulic retention time, hydrodynamic shear force, substrate composition i.e. feed, organic loading and settling time amongst others have been demonstrated to stimulate bacteria to secrete more EPS and subsequently enhance the microbial granule characteristics. Various approaches have been investigated in improving the biogranule development process. These include the application of magnetic influence in biogranule formation. It is expedient to mention that the application of magnetic field in the development of aerobic granules may need to be further given attention. Recent studies have explored the potential of magnetic field application in enhancing the activated sludge process and a few works in granulation, and these studies hold that, MF has the capability of enhancing the microbial granule characteristics. Additional various types of enhancer have also been applied in improving the biogranules development process. Any enhancers that are able to improve the biogranules development process have improved the initial stage of biogranules formation.   Despite of various approaches the durability of the biogranules needs to be further investigated. The stability of the biogranulation system need to be explored in order to assure the performance of these biogranules will still be at its best performance as what has been claimed before.
